Five to try: ladies’ nights (that actually feed you)

August 23, 2017

Long gone are the/my nights of flocking to whichever bar gave ladies the most sparkling rosé on a Tuesday night, spending the evening wearing the highest heels and flicking hair. These days if I’m getting together with friends I want three things:

  1. A chair (bar stools don’t count – they’re anxiety-inducing)
  2. Someone to bring me drinks rather than queuing for them
  3. Ideally carbs. Again, brought to me.

Thankfully, Dubai’s nightlife seems to have grown older, wiser and hungrier with me, and there are now several options for us mums who just want a nice sit down and a catch up without spending big.

Here are some of my favourites (and not a 22-year-old in a bodycon dress in sight – hurrah!)

  1. Il Faro

A relatively new pizzeria on The Palm, I can’t wait for it to be cool enough to sit outside at this picturesque gem. On Tuesdays ladies get unlimited pizza and prosecco for AED149. Let me say that again. Unlimited pizza and prosecco. There’s a pizza menu of about six choices, and waiters keep glasses topped up with bubbles. My advice? Order a selection of pizzas for the table to share, then request more as necessary, rather than choosing one for yourself, as it’s pretty hard to justify a whole extra one just for you. Although there’s no judging from me if you want to take down another pepperoni.

  1. Ruth’s Chris

I’ll always have a soft spot for this steakhouse, as it was where my husband and I had our first date (a blind date, no less). Years later it still stacks up, and is loved for the prime cuts served on sizzling plates, tasty sides, epic cheesecake and lengthy wine list. Its ladies’ night on Wednesday is always packed out, so booking a table is essential. You’ll be treated to four drinks – cocktails or generous pours of red or white – and 50% off food. Expect starters like lobster mac ‘n’ cheese, beef carpaccio and oysters, followed by signature steaks (the petite ribeye is my favourite) with sauces and sides, then THAT cheesecake.

  1. Geale’s

Think fish ‘n’ chips with a side of style. This British restaurant is all monochrome, with a raw bar, G&Ts the size of your head and a terrace that is heaven come Autumn. On Tuesdays there is a deal for both ladies AND gents, where you get fish ‘n’ chips and either a beer or wine for AED99 – it’s usually AED120 for food alone, so this is a pretty good deal, and I like that the chaps are included. Prices start from AED40 for a G&T the size of your head.

  1. Al Hambra

If you need an excuse to use the dancing lady emoji then this is it – Al Hambra is all authentic tapas, sangria and live music. One of Dubai’s few Spanish restaurants, this cosy spot in Al Qasr hosts Senorita Night every Tuesday from 6.30pm to 11.30pm, where us fairer sex can get involved in unlimited tapas from the menu, cold cuts and sangria for AED150. There’s a choice of red, white, rosé and sparkling sangria, and the dishes are delish, with favourites including crispy fried chorizo, patatas bravas and serrano ham croquettes alongside more adventurous plates like stuffed mussels and white bait.

  1. Grapeskin

The wine bar at La Ville hotel in City Walk is well worth a visit after a bit of a shop or before the cinema (just me?), and every Wednesday ladies get two free glasses of wine and a mini cheeseboard. And if you want to make a night of it, selected drinks cost AED25, and the full menu is delicious. It’s pretty quiet, so definitely one to try if you want a proper catch up with friends over nibbles, rather than a raucous night out – though I think we’ve established that you’re reading the wrong recommendations if that’s what you’re looking for!
