Dos and don’ts for winning at Valentine’s Day

It might just be another Wednesday to you, but your lady might have other ideas on February 14th.  Here’s one for the men in your life to read…   Don’t – forget Let’s warm up with an easy one. Pick up your phone, go to the calendar, select February 14th and set an […]

FOUND: A mattress for you – and your bump!

Aside from the nausea, breakouts and bloating, the biggest complaint I hear from pregnant women is the sleeplessness. Surely this should kick in AFTER the baby is born?! But no, for many of us – myself included – uncomfortable nights become one of the most upsetting parts of pregnancy. After a long day […]

7 to see: my family-friendly picks of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature

The highlight of every bookworm’s calendar is only seven weeks away! The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature (or ‘lit fest’ as everyone calls it) is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and is bringing together authors, illustrators, agents and avid readers for 10 days of top-class events. Think workshops, meet and greets, talks and […]

FREE downloadable family wall planner for 2018!

Confession time: I mock my husband A LOT for his planning. He’s the king of Excel, with our holidays, family meet-ups and more, all plotted out in colour-coded glory. But guess what? It works. So that shuts me up. Last year he created a huge (A0) wall planner for our kitchen, and it helped […]

  • mothership santa letter

What I want for Christmas, by Tabitha, age nearly 10 months

Dear Santa,   Here’s the dilemma, big man, I can’t talk yet, so my parents are having to guess what I’d like to find under the tree. Also, I have an older sister and they seem to have bought her ALL the stuff. They’re uninspired, I can tell. I saw the lady them looking […]

How to give up the dummy (for dummies)

I was one of those parents who would never give my baby a dummy. This was before I had children, of course.   But by week two of my first daughter’s life I was off to the pharmacy, willing to try anything that would stop the mewling, stretch out her feeding and give […]

FOUND! The ultimate UAE gifts from Yislamoo

As holiday season approaches, many of us are left scratching our heads, panic buying and over-spending on presents that don’t hit the mark.   My husband and I have a long-standing tradition of buying each other prints for special occasions (though we also have a bad habit of taking them to the framers […]

Must-have custom children’s books by Story For Me

Every little girl and boy is living their own adventure – from learning new words and making friends to exploring nature and navigating the ways of the world, each day is exciting.   So what if they could be the star of their very own story? Imagine their excitement when they see their […]

  • car seat mothership dubai babyshop

How to… keep kids happy in the car

We’ve all had those days – the kids won’t get into the car, don’t want to be buckled up, and then spend the whole trip crying, whining or worse. Whether it’s a five-minute or five-hour journey, your nerves will be jangled, and your day feels ruined. Therefore, I am proud to be partnering with […]

  • bonding with baby mothership dubai

Truth time: it took me six months to bond with my baby

Of all the motherhood myths (‘breastfeeding comes naturally’, ‘you’ll sleep when the baby sleeps’, ‘breastfeeding makes the weight fall off’ etc etc) the one that can do the most damage to new mums is that it’s love at first sight when your baby is born. There’s an instant bond.   You lovingly stroke […]

ABOUT ME

I’m Helen Farmer, an editor and journalist, mum to 4-year-old Phoebe and 2-year-old Tabitha, wife to Nick and a mummy blogger in Dubai (even though I don’t really identify as one, but I blog, and I’m a mum, so there you go). I’ve been living in the Middle East for the last 10 years, working in books, magazines and broadcasting, shedding some light on the good and bad of life, work and motherhood in the UAE.

ABOUT THE BLOG

The Mothership is for you if you’re a busy, active mum who can’t stand small talk, bad info and twee blogs that make out that mothering is all unicorns and rose petals, instead of admitting that you can love your child so much it terrifies you – while still wanting a night in alone watching The Great British Bake Off with a double G&T or a night out pretending you don’t have children.
