Book vs real life: 30 weeks pregnant

It’s 6.15am, and I’m sitting in the living room, the Christmas tree lights on, carols playing via YouTube and the call to prayer just audible. I’m contemplating a slice of Christmas cake because toast feels like too much hassle.   I’m also thinking about having a bit of a cry, because, well, I don’t […]

Toddler-friendly recipes: easy baked eggs

With the kids on Christmas holidays, many of us have a bit more time in the morning to enjoy a family breakfast. These baked eggs by chef (and mum of two) Lyndsay from I Eat My Peas are a brilliant breakfast dish that everyone can enjoy. My 23-month-old is a bit hit-or-miss with […]

Book vs real life: 29 weeks pregnant

Sorry to anyone who’s not in Dubai but… Isn’t the weather amazing? I just want to be outside all the time. And it bodes well for long walks to get this baby out come February, then long walks to get this baby weight off.   We spent the weekend in Ras Al Khaimah […]

Dos and don’ts when your wife is pregnant: a survival guide

I’m going to keep this simple, fellas. Save this post, print it off and stick it on the fridge/in your wallet/copy it out 100 times a day until you remember it by heart.   You might think your job is done after conception, and you’ll next be required in the delivery room for […]

Toddler-friendly recipes: crispy beef noodles

Our recipes series with chef and mum Lyndsay from I Eat My Peas continues with this quick and easy noodle stir-fry, which can be adapted for weaning babies and grown-ups alike.   Lyndsay says, “My daughter loves getting messy and she has great fun with this noodle dish. It’s debatable how much makes […]

Book vs real life: 28 weeks pregnant

So here we are. The third trimester. 28 weeks pregnant and still in total denial about giving birth and life with two children. I held a newborn recently and was shocked at how frail she was, all floppy legs and baggy skin around the knees, head lolling and bird-like bones. I’m really […]

10 of the best stocking fillers

With Christmas around the corner (and those letters to Santa no doubt en route to the North Pole), it’s time to think about what to fill your little ones’ stockings with. I’ve teamed up with new online shop Kidore, based here in Dubai and founded by fellow mum Ayshwarya Chari, to make sure you […]

Toddler-friendly recipes: perfect porridge

It might still be sunny here in Dubai, but there’s a definite chill in the air, and this is the ideal season for a warming bowl of porridge for breakfast.   This week, Lyndsay from weaning and kid-friendly foodie website I Eat My Peas shares her recipe for perfect, everyday porridge (complete with four […]

Book vs real life: 27 weeks pregnant

At 27 weeks pregnant I’m nudging closer to the third trimester eg squeaky bum time, where I need to start getting my act together.   While I’m generally a fairly upbeat person, it would be remiss (and dishonest) of me to say that this week has been easy. Some of it has been […]

Win! A hotel stay, spa time (and even babysitting) with Premier Inn

Hands up who’s tired? Maybe your little one doesn’t sleep through the night, or is going through the dreaded sleep regression, or decides it’s playtime at 4.30am, or has a habit of wanting a cuddle/drink/chat when they should be sleeping happily in their bed? If you wake up sleepy, need a mid-afternoon chocolate […]

ABOUT ME

the mothership

I’m Helen Farmer, an editor and journalist, mum to 2-year-old Phoebe and baby Tabitha, wife to Nick and a mummy blogger in Dubai (even though I don’t really identify as one, but I blog, and I’m a mum, so there you go). I’ve been living in the Middle East for the last 10 years, working in books, magazines and online, shedding some light on the good and bad of life, work and motherhood in the UAE.

ABOUT THE BLOG

The Mothership is for you if you’re a busy, active mum who can’t stand small talk, bad info and twee blogs that make out that mothering is all unicorns and rose petals, instead of admitting that you can love your child so much it terrifies you – while still wanting a night in alone watching The Great British Bake Off with a double G&T or a night out pretending you don’t have children.
